What is GREENPOWER USA?
Greenpower USA is a national STEM program where students design, build, and race fully electric cars. It gives students hands-on experience with real engineering—from planning and constructing the vehicle to testing, troubleshooting, and competing at races across the country. Through this process, teams build skills in problem-solving, aerodynamics, electrical systems, collaboration, and project management. The focus isn’t just on speed; it’s on innovation, safety, efficiency, and working together to create a high-performing electric vehicle.
A Brief History
Greenpower began in the United Kingdom in 1999 as a way to inspire young people to pursue engineering through an exciting, competitive challenge. The program expanded to the United States in 2011, when a high school team in Alabama helped test and refine the first U.S. car kit. The success of that early pilot led to the first official American race in 2015 and the creation of the Greenpower USA Foundation shortly afterward. Since then, the program has grown rapidly, bringing thousands of students into the world of electric vehicle design and hands-on STEM learning.
